A Two-Room Garden Gym and Spa Room

A bespoke garden room in Crich with separate gym and spa spaces

Our clients wanted to create a high-quality garden building that could support two very different uses: a practical home gym and a relaxing spa room.

Rather than building two separate structures, we designed one generous 8m x 4m garden room with an internal partition wall. This allowed the building to provide two individual rooms, each designed around its own purpose, while maintaining one clean and cohesive appearance within the garden.

The finished project provides a dedicated space for exercise and recovery, positioned within a mature garden setting and finished to a high standard inside and out.

The brief

The clients wanted the new building to feel like a meaningful addition to their home and garden, not simply an outbuilding.

The gym needed to be robust, comfortable and practical, with suitable flooring and enough space for exercise equipment. The spa room required a completely different specification, with moisture-resistant finishes, ventilation and carefully considered lighting.

It was also important that the project was handled smoothly and with minimal stress while the work was taking place. From the outset, we focused on clear communication, careful planning and keeping the site tidy throughout the build.

One building, two separate rooms

The garden room measures 8m x 4m and was divided internally to create two separate spaces.

One side was designed as a gym, with a plastered and painted finish, skirting boards and black rubber gym matting across the full floor area. This created a practical, durable space for training at home.

The second room was designed as a spa room, with its own sliding doors and a specialist moisture-resistant specification. This included an internal vapour barrier, aqua board, composite shower room panels to the walls and UPVC tongue-and-groove ceiling cladding.

By separating the two uses, the finished building gives the clients a room for exercise and a room for relaxation, without either space compromising the other.

A specialist spa room specification

Spa rooms and hot tub spaces need to be designed differently from standard garden rooms because of moisture and humidity.

For this project, the spa room was specified with moisture-resistant wall and ceiling finishes, an extractor fan and a heated towel rail. We also recommended using suitable wall lighting in the spa room rather than ceiling spotlights, helping to reduce the risk of moisture ingress into the roof structure.

The result is a more appropriate and durable internal finish for a space designed around relaxation, warmth and humidity.

Designed for comfort, light and garden views

The building includes a combination of large black sliding doors and windows, giving each space plenty of natural light and a strong connection to the garden.

The gym room has wide sliding doors looking out across the lawn, making the space feel open and motivating to use. The spa room also benefits from its own glazing and direct access, allowing it to function as a separate retreat.

The internal layout was designed so that both rooms feel properly considered, rather than one space simply being added onto the other.

Cedar cladding and a natural garden setting

Externally, the garden room was finished with cedar cladding to the front, right and left sides. The cedar was finished with Osmo UV protection to help preserve its warm natural appearance.

The rear elevation was finished in black composite cladding, providing a practical and low-maintenance finish on the less visible side of the building.

Black doors, windows, fascia and external wall lights give the building a clean, modern look, while the cedar helps it sit naturally within the surrounding garden.

From the house and patio, the finished garden room feels balanced and well positioned within the wider landscape.

The finished result

This project created a flexible and high-specification garden room that supports both fitness and relaxation.

The gym provides a convenient place to train at home, while the spa room offers a separate space to unwind. The two-room layout means each area has been designed around its own purpose, with the correct finishes and specification for how it will be used.

It is a great example of how a bespoke garden room can be tailored to more than one lifestyle need, creating a building that feels personal, practical and enjoyable every day.

  • “Just a quick note to say how delighted we are with our new rooms. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have Matt and all the team on site. It was very important to us that the project would be hassle free due to my health, and I can without any doubt say that’s what was delivered. It is rare in my experience to meet a team with such attention to detail and work ethic as Matt and his team. I would have no reservations about using Matt again on my next project. Thanks again."
