Additional Living Space with a Covered Hot Tub Area
A bespoke garden room and veranda in Derbyshire
Our client wanted to create a stylish, multi-purpose garden room that would provide comfortable additional living space while also making better use of the garden.
The design combined a fully finished internal room with a covered veranda area, creating a sheltered space for a hot tub and outdoor seating. The result is a contemporary garden room that works just as well for relaxing inside as it does for enjoying the garden outside.
Set within a landscaped garden with raised beds, stone walling and patio areas, the finished building feels like a natural part of the outdoor space rather than a separate structure added at the end.
The brief
The client wanted a garden room that could be used throughout the year, with a comfortable internal space and a covered area for outdoor relaxation.
The veranda was an important part of the design. It needed to feel sheltered and private while still visually connecting with the garden. The garden room also needed to look smart from the main patio area, as it would be viewed directly from the house and seating areas.
Externally, the client wanted a modern contrast between natural timber and black finishes. Internally, the room needed to feel warm, bright and properly finished, with flooring, plastered walls, lighting and electrics all included.
A garden room with a sheltered veranda
The main garden room measures 6m wide by 3.5m deep, with a 3m veranda to the left-hand side.
The veranda creates a covered outdoor area that can be used for a hot tub, seating or entertaining. A black composite feature wall and black soffit were used to make this area feel more defined and atmospheric, while also creating a strong contrast with the cedar-clad main room.
Steel supporting posts were included so the veranda could remain open without the need for a central timber post. This helps keep the covered area feeling spacious and practical.
The extended roofline gives the whole building a striking, contemporary profile and provides useful shelter across the front of the garden room and veranda.
Flexible design during the build
During the build, the design was amended to include full-height windows.
This change brought more natural light into the room and improved the connection between the internal space and the garden. It also gave the finished building a more modern, architectural feel.
Being able to adapt details during a project is one of the advantages of working with a bespoke, hands-on garden room company. Where practical, we will always try to accommodate changes that improve the finished result.
Corner glazing and garden views
The garden room includes black sliding doors meeting at the corner, creating a wide glazed opening that fills the room with light and gives clear views across the garden.
The corner glazing makes the internal space feel open and connected to the veranda and decking. In warmer weather, the doors can be opened to allow the room and covered outdoor area to work together as one larger entertaining space.
The full-height windows add further light and create a clean, contemporary appearance from both inside and outside.
A fully finished interior
Inside, the garden room was fully plastered, painted and finished with skirting boards. The dark wood-effect flooring works well with the teal feature wall, giving the room a warm, comfortable and contemporary feel. Recessed spotlights provide practical lighting across the full length of the room, while the large glazed openings bring in plenty of natural daylight.
The finished interior is flexible enough to be used as an additional living room, entertaining space, relaxation room or garden retreat.
Cedar, black composite and composite decking
The exterior combines natural cedar cladding with black composite cladding.
Cedar was used across the main visible areas to add warmth and texture, while the black composite cladding creates a bold contrast on the veranda wall and side elevations.
Composite decking was installed around the front of the building and beneath the covered veranda, tying the room and outdoor space together. The black decking edge detail helps ground the building within the garden and complements the black roofline, doors, windows and external lighting.
The finished result
This project created a stylish and flexible garden room that can be enjoyed in several ways. The internal room provides comfortable additional living space, while the covered veranda creates a sheltered area for a hot tub or outdoor seating. The large roof overhang, corner glazing and full-height window help the room feel open, modern and closely connected to the garden.
It is a great example of how a bespoke garden room can do more than provide an extra room. With the right design, it can transform the way a garden is used and create a new place to relax, entertain and enjoy time at home.
